Windows 7 (RC1) is available

Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is available. I have downloaded it and installed and spent about 45 minutes noodling around.

I have not installed Autodesk software yet. Usually, when I build a new system, I install OS, patch it, reboot, patch it again, reboot, patch it again... (you get the idea) and then build an image of the clean OS. Then I add all my business apps. (Office, Photoshop, CD software, utilities, etc). Patch all those then make another image. This is my clean system before Autodesk software. I then install my Autodesk stuff.

For Windows 7, I am going to approach a little differently. I think I am going to install only the necessary business apps, then go right to Autodesk software so I can test it out. I have two hard drvies on my system, so I set up dual boot. I might be crazy, but I am actually contemplating doing some of my book chapters on Windows 7...

I stuck with 32bit for now, but I am also considering downloading and installing 64bit as well. Don't have a third hard drive, so I would have to re-image for that.

Anyone else tried Revit or ACA on Windows 7 yet?

Have tried the Revit and AutoCAD Architecture/MEP 2010s on the W7the beta. Have not yet got to the RC but the only problem I had was the Revit help file would not launch.

Actual application operation was very slick and I love the W7 taskbar/windows management.

I am trying to carve out some time today or tomorrow to install it. I keep hearing/reading good things...

'Been running it about 3 weeks now, ACA 2009 & Revit 2010. Seems to be working just fine.

Nope, not by far. I have installed Revit Arch and AutoCAD Arch now. Both seem to run fine. I have even written a few chapters in the new environment. I like it. I am anxious to have the real thing out.

Not sure this is the suggestion you want to hear, but I don't use the upgrade option. I install a clean copy of Windows, then reinstall all applications.

Thanks Paul, i bought my compture in sept 09 so i was eligible for an upgrade...its a 64 bit machine. So in your case a complete new instalation is working... i had revit allready with vista... do u think removing it completely and reinstalling will help.
thanks

Make sure you have a good backup of anything you need first. But yes,
I have done this now with both the 32bit ad 64bit versions on my own system and it worked fine.
There may be a way to "rescue" the install you have, but I am not completely sure. You might be able to uninstall Revit, then use RegEdit to clear out any left over settings, then delete any stray folders in Program Files and such.

Either way, a clean install is a likely to be the best option.

Welcome!

The traditional print publishing industry requires long production cycles before any book or publication can see print. This situation has become more acute for authors like myself who publish books on annual software releases. I hope to use this blog to publish information, updates, addenda, ruminations, and other "mid-cycle" missives. I hope you enjoy it.
